Going on a Serengeti Tour – The Big Five & Beyond

I was fortunate enough to observe a rhino, even from such a far off vantage point. Credit to the restricted home & hunting, the black rhinos are critically scarce. The rhino and 4 other animals – elephant, leopard, Cape buffalo and lion are known as “The Big Five” since they were once the most tough to hunt. Today, it is hardly a fair battle. Poaching and unlawful hunting has beleaguered elephants & the big cats, though the black rhinos have had the worst of it.

Here in this post I’ll guide you on how to witness “The Big Five” and more when you are on a Serengeti tour. So, let’s find out:

Wake up in the dark. Have a bite, maybe some snacks, and lurch towards a 4-wheel drive rig. As the sun rise, stand in the zip and you possibly spot a giraffe right away. Giraffes are normal, as are zebras, but that doesn’t make them less attractive, and they’ll never stop being so gorgeous to peep at. Bring a camera with you to take some snaps when the giraffe will wink at you.

Stroll across the surface of the Serengeti until you find lions – big hairy males with darkened manes, many females and if you are lucky enough you can see them hunting together. They may be chasing a zebra!

Then check out the Cape buffalo – the most dangerous of the Big Five for their intensity in self protection. I toured during the dry season and the Cape buffalos were dispersed & solitary, but my guide mentioned that throughout the wet season when the grass is green, one can witness these wild creatures in abundance.

Find a leopard! Well, this isn’t easy at all! Dressed ideally in their mask of gold and black spots, leopards vanish into the dry grasslands in a fraction of a second. My guide discovered one using his sharp vision. Later, he discovers three coincidentally you can say. A mother and her 2 young ones playing on the grassland. I tried to take some snaps with my expensive camera, but I failed miserably because I was so excited that my hands were shaking.

Nothing could be more spectacular than witnessing a herd of elephants in the wild. Lose yourself when you hear their large years whistling in the heat. I found 5 elephants at a tiny pond sprinkling water with each other. Such a wonderful sight! You aren’t done even you have seen all the Big 5. Come out from your tent in the middle of the night to witness an overwhelming collection of stars above your head. Enthralled yourself while hearing the spooky sounds of lions roaring in the sheer darkness.
